Each year it gets more and more crucial to incorporate sustainability and more eco-conscious practices into our lifestyles. And this year is no different. We can do this in various ways. From the paint you put on your walls to the bed you sleep on, the design industry is introducing more sustainable design products each year.

Here’s a list of our 7 favorite eco-friendly interior design products for 2023.

Durable, Sustainable Surfaces

When Chicago interior design firm Sarah Jacquelyn Interiors (SJI) works with a new client, sustainability, health, safety and welfare are always at the forefront of their minds. Specifying environmentally conscious products is particularly important to their firm, as the construction industry is one of the most wasteful industries in the world. It’s up to designers and architects to make informed choices. This is something registered interior designers have knowledge and experience with as part of the certification process to become a registered interior designer.

For SJI, Cambria Quartz Surfaces is one of their go-to products in terms of sustainability. Location is a major factor with sustainable practices, as freight and distance are factored into carbon footprint. Cambria is made in America. Quartz is one of the most common minerals on Earth and Cambria mines from a sustainable mine, which are backfilled after the quartz is extracted. 100% of the power is hydroelectric. 100% of the water used is recycled, saving 1.6 billion gallons annually. Cambria’s products are green guard certified meeting some of the world’s most rigorous third-party tests for low-emitting products which reduce indoor pollution and chemical exposure. Should we go on?

Plus, their products are easy to care for and easy to clean. They are durable, specified with confidence and come in a variety of beautiful options and colors. It’s no wonder Sarah Jacquelyn Interiors uses their products regularly in their designs. Pictured here is a bathroom designed by SJI which features Cambria counters, shower ledge and niche.

Add a Touch of Green and Wellness with Preserved Moss

A great eco-friendly product for 2023 is preserved moss, which was recently installed in a lobby remodel by CI Design + Build. There are so many benefits to preserved moss besides the obvious, beautiful design that it brings to a space.

Preserved moss is a simple way to bring greenery into any space as an alternative to live plants. It’s maintenance-free, no pruning or watering needed. While it looks and feels as if it’s living, it does not require sunlight or soil, and is water-conserving since it never needs watering. It is sustainably grown and will last for years. By incorporating preserved moss into your space, you will not only earn points towards WELL building certification, but it also provides biophilic benefits that promote wellness.

A Bed that’s Renewable, Adjustable and Improvable

Over 20 million mattresses and box-springs are disposed of every year in the U.S. As a Fourth Generation privately owned company, DUX of Sweden’s only responsibilities are to their customers, the quality and longevity of their product and to long-term the health of the planet.

The DUX bed’s innovative component design is built for longevity. The design is renewable, adjustable, and improvable – it changes as you change. The components are replaceable, and some even upgradable. Adjust the comfort as your needs change due to pregnancy, injury or aging; Restore the components due to damage, spills or wear; Refresh the bed with the release of new accessories and technological innovations.

Their renewable design means The DUX bed may just be the last bed you’ll ever own. This, coupled with the highest-quality materials and a 97 year heritage of Swedish craftsmanship, results in a bed that is made to last. And, simply put, the longer a bed lasts the fewer will end up in landfills.
